Everything we read and hear encourages guarding against predators to the point of panic as soon as your child is beyond sight. I can't imagine in a mere 5 years letting him ride public transportation alone. To be honest, I'd rather live on top of a mountain and home school before I'm prepared for him to walk the few blocks on his own, when it is time. However, this article and other advice tells me it's right and good for a child to live without the constant parental over protection. As parents we bear enough guilt as it is, I'd feel guilt if I let him go and he was hurt, but I think it might be just as painful to know that MY fear impaired his independence to the extent that he wasn't capable of moving freely in this world as an older child, teen or adult.

Beautiful projects, cool design. I spent lots of time here. I only wish I would have paid more attention when my mom tried to teach me (repeatedly and patiently) how to knit!

I was listening to a radio interview today. They kept referring to him in the past tense and never used his name. I didn't know he had cancer. I am very sad about this.
